Owlet blog tour stop #32 read-along excerpt

Following is the continuing read-along excerpt for stop #32 on the Owlet blog tour. Enjoy!

“Roger...why didn’t you tell me?” Diana said, trying to hide the waiver in her voice.

“It isn’t what you think Diana. She isn’t a Raven and she isn’t going to die. Iris didn’t dream of black feathers. Do you remember the poem? The one they teach you in classes about the least common Stryx?” Roger’s voice was firm.

“Of course. Who doesn’t? You know my dad. He wouldn’t let me get away with not having a full education on each Aves,” Diana said, staring down the road where Iris had disappeared. “Why?”

“She saw white feathers. White, not black. I was too afraid I might be wrong and tell you too quickly so I spent the morning checking before Caleb gets here, and I was right. She is...”

“I know what white means, Roger! So Caleb is really coming to the house?” Diana was sitting on the ground completely still, the luggage sat beside her.

“Yes. I hate having to take apart Iris’ room, but I don’t know how else to hide that she has been here. I am going to tell him that the double books are here so that I have one to keep in perfect condition and the other to read, or just let him assume. So much of it I can explain away but not her room.” Roger’s voice was filled with a quiet sorrow. “I miss her so much already. I wish it didn’t have to be this way.”

“I don’t understand. If she isn’t a Raven then why does it have to be this way? Why can’t we tell him?”

“Diana, remember what we have done. We have broken every law and put the entire Society of Feathers in harm’s way. What she really is won’t matter to him, only what we did to save her.”

“But Roger...white feathers...you know what that means. What she could be.”
