Project to Published: Helpful Tips about Getting Past Writers Block

Welcome to my new weekly meme "Project to Published" helping aspiring authors and all who share their love for writing!

Passing the Dreaded Writers Block

Writers block can happen to anyone at any stage of a project. No matter the project, suddenly the creativity stops flowing and you are left wondering what happened to all of those nights when your mind was running with so many ideas you could hardly fall sleep. Although the first step may sound silly, it is important to acknowledge that you have writers block because it is harder to get past if you are not honest with yourself.

Once you realize and admit that you are struggling, you are more likely to try to work past it and persevere instead of procrastinating and allowing the situation to get worse. I am as guilty as anyone in allowing procrastination to sneak in, but my defense remains my honesty when I’m hitting that block. Here are a few simple tricks that I’ve learned that really help.

- Remind yourself of what first inspired you (What gave you the idea? Was it a song, a picture? Is there anything that reminds you of that moment of inspiration or your story? Maybe you should keep it on hand. You never know it just might be really helpful.)
- If you have an outline for your novel, then don’t be afraid to skip ahead a little bit and try a different scene – you can always come back and fill in the blanks later. Just remember to take into consideration any changes that might occur during your story. For example, if your character gave someone a necklace they are wearing in the last scene, but you can’t decide how to write him or her giving it to the character and therefore skip ahead, the character with the necklace will need to be wearing it. (I will be doing a “Project to Published” post later on about outlining.)
- Start a journal! Writing everyday always helps. Think about exercising. Doesn’t it become easier over time to do that workout? The more you do something, the better you get and the more natural it becomes. It will also become easier for you to write on schedule.
- Flip to a random page in one of your favorite novels and read it (Make sure it is the same genre as what you are writing or you may change your style). Sometimes remembering how much you enjoyed reading something can help re-awaken the writer in you.
- Sleep matters! Although it may sound strange, sleep is key to concentration. A healthy, well-rested mind will be able to give you the level of creativity you desire during the day. It may even help your creativity at night through dreams.
- Keep it fun! You should be writing because you love it – anything you can do to remind you of that love can help! Don’t be afraid to sing at the top of your lungs, listen to loud music, watch your favorite show or dance randomly because you want to. Writing is work, but work can be fun!

Getting past writer’s block can be different for every person, but hopefully the above tips can help. The biggest mistake a person can make is not striving to get past it. As a published author, I know I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t keep trying and working to get past each and every blank page, seeing them as opportunities instead of dreading them. In many ways, being a professional author is like being an actor/actress – you have to be able to call upon your emotions or muse. Some professionals spend years working on these skills, but all of it begins with something inspirational. Find something that inspires you and let that inspiration help you along the way!

What is your inspiration?

Sincerely,
Emma Michaels

National Dog Day! My little Chihuahua: Hope!

Guess what today it...
Have  you guessed yet?
Do you know?

National Dog Day!

Some of you have read through my interviews and by now many of you probably know I have a small white Chihuahua named Winter Hope. Hope for short. I figured what better day to do a post dedicated to my little helper! Here she is, my confidant, my companion and my writer's assistant (or sometimes distraction)
Hope!

Yes, she is wearing shirts in these particular pictures. I will admit I was against dressing up dogs until I found out more about chihuahuas and why in cold weather climates it can be needed or they get very sick. These are just her fun shirts we let her choose to put on or not in summer. We just happened to be taking pictures on two days she decided to have them on last summer.

She LOVES to run as fast as she can around the garden, tortillas, strawberries, anything fluffy she can find a place to lay down on including people, she will sit next to my desk until I pull out my drawer (I finally keep it empty and just have her stuff in there normally) so that she can hop up and sit next to me when I write, she adores anything pink even if I have no idea how she can tell if it is pink or not and has a remarkable amount of nicknames including Chew (Chew-bark-a) and Bumble Bee because when she growls while playing... it really does sound like bumble bee buzzing.

She is my writers companion and as I write she sits up on my shoulders peeking over to see how I am doing. She has even been known to lick my face if I stop typing for any amount of time to keep me going and motivated!

Happy national dogs day to my wonderful little girl, Hope!

Sincerely,
Emma Michaels

"Project to Published" I challenge/dare you!

Welcome to my new meme “Project to Published”, where I hope to help writers just starting out make their way to their dreams! I hope that this meme will be able to help each of you as you go from a blank piece of paper to getting your project published.

Throughout this new meme, I hope to be able to help hopeful authors, and in general, people with a love for writing with all of the helpful tips I have found, links and so much more. First, I will caution each you that the hardest lesson to learn is a big part of taking your first steps toward writing your first novel, or going for the golden egg of being published. The hardest lesson to learn is that the only way to truly fail is to never try. While rejection hurts, each of you will still know that you were still able to write your novel, get past your initial writers block, come up with an original story idea, and/or any number of steps you may have taken that so many others never took the chance to try.

I will not lie to you. It is a tough market, but there are rewards past what others might show you or what other online sources may explain or even understand. It isn’t about getting published or the amount of fans you make. It is about growth. It is an absolutely amazing feeling when you become published that makes that one yes worth all of the times you heard no. But there is also more to it than merely reaching your destination. Writing a novel, allowing yourself to have the type of freedom that a blank page can give you, can provide so much more than only what you hoped or dreamed.

That blank page before you means that you have all the room in the world to grow as much as you want. It means that you have a world of open possibilities laid out right there in front of you because in a novel anything can happen. I write because it is what I love to do. Every time I start a new story, I look at my computer screen and suddenly it comes flowing out of me, as though a part of myself that had been trapped or locked away has finally been set loose. It is a freedom unmatched. Does this sound interesting? Here is my very first challenge for you.

Look at that blank piece of paper and don’t think about publication. Don’t think about that heart wrenching need to have your voice be heard and/or your words read, don’t think about agents or marketing. Sit down and let that blank page in front of you spell out freedom. Go ahead, type it even! Spell it out and read it carefully f-r-e-e-d-o-m. Now I think we all know what to do with freedom. USE IT! Let your heart and mind feel free to tell the story inside of you, not only because of your hopes and dreams for yourself, but because that story feels its own need to be told!

I challenge you to write!

Sincerely,
Emma Michaels

Interview with JC Marino author of Dante's Journey

Hello everyone!
As some of you may already know I have something very special planned for today. We have the author of the recently released Dante’s Journey, JC Marino here for an interview! As many of you know, I have been doing a lot of interview myself lately and I have noticed a trend with questions so I will ask some ordinary questions and then I have a list of questions I always wanted to be asked, so have decided it would be fun to ask other authors!

Book Description:
A flash of light and Detective Joe Dante steps through. No longer on the cobblestone streets of 1961 Boston, Joe finds himself in a horrifying new world-Hell itself. Joe was in hot pursuit of his family's killer, drug lord Filippo Argenti, when both were killed, and isn't about to let a little thing like death slow him down. So, with a healthy dose of New England stubbornness and the help of a mysterious guide, Virgil DiMini, Joe must evade angry demons, and search ever-lower through the rings of the original Dante's Inferno in hopes of finding justice for his wife and children. However, Joe will soon discover that behind every sin lies a secret and each secret revealed could land Joe in an eternity of hot water... VERY hot.

Ordinary Questions:

Emma: Without further ado here is JC Marino!
Hello, JC Marino and thank you for joining us today.

JC Marino: Hi Emma, and everyone. It’s absolutely my pleasure.
Thanks for having me. Before we start, here are some links which may interest you.

Website:
www.jcmarino.com

Dante’s Journey Book Trailer:

Latest Review from Prinkipria Magazine:
http://prinkipria.com/2010/08/01/dantes-journey-book-review/

Emma: Where did the idea for Dante’s Journey come from and what made you decide to write it?

JC Marino: That’s a long story, but I’ll try to keep it to the Reader’s Digest version.

When I was in the military, I read a book called “The Worm that Never Dies.” It described Hell in such a way that scared the HELL out of me.

It sent me on a quest to learn more and more about the nature of Hell, and by extension, my own faith. I eventually came to Dante’s Inferno and was fascinated by the symbolism and the difference between “torture” and “torment”. I was raised as a Catholic and believed that Hell was a place where Demons gained great pleasure from torturing damned souls. But, as I delved deeper into Christianity as a whole, I came to believe that Hell is a place where souls are tormented.

Torture is something others do to you.
Torment is something you do to yourself.

It’s like the old adage: the teacher didn’t give you that failing grade… you gave it to yourself. Anyway, in the 80s, I wrote a computer game based on Dante’s Inferno for a school project (way before EA Games) and the idea stayed with me. I was always interested in writing, but I was never serious until I moved to LA. Once I got serious, it only made sense to write about something that had interested me most of my adult life.

Emma:  In “Dante’s Inferno” (Divine Comedy, Purgatorio, Paradiso) There were many very interesting and new concepts about Hell (Though it was written in the fourteenth century), including the descriptions of 9 rings of hell and creatures within these rings. For those of us who have read Dante Alighieri’s work, will we see any similarities?

JC Marino: You will see MANY similarities.

The environment is about 90% the same (if not more), and just about all the characters are based on the original. I like to compare Dante’s Journey to the original Inferno as the TV show Smallville is to the original Superboy. In Smallville, all the characters are the same but with a modernized twist. For example, you still see Lana Lang, the Green Arrow, Lex Luthor, etc, but definitely NOT the way you would from the original. In the Dante’s Journey, you still see Beatrice, Virgil, Hector, Socrates, etc, but most are with a modern twist. For example, in the original, Dante is a righteous man in Hell with his guide, Virgil, a poet Dante had respected in life. In his travels, he comes to Filippo Argenti, Dante’s mortal enemy.

In Dante’s Journey, Joe Dante is a Boston Detective in Hell and comes to find Virgil, his guide, someone who Joe doesn’t know or trust. Joe’s goal is to find the drug dealer who murdered his family (including his wife Beatrice). The drug dealer is Filippo Argenti. All the people Joe meets are in the same circle as of the original story, but there are twists and turns to give it more flavor. Keep an eye out for Alexander the Great, who’s now a Viet Nam officer who fragged his Captain.

Emma: You have several degrees including Criminal Justice, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Creative Writing and have had a number of amazing accomplishments on your resume, Did these accomplishments help you when you were writing Dante’s Journey or on your road to publication? For instance, your Creative Writing degree or yours wins for the Nicholls and Austin Screenwriting Competitions?

JC Marino: Just so you know, I’ve never won either screenwriting competitions. I think I said that I made some finals in both (either quarter-finals or semi-finals). If I said otherwise, please let me know where and I’ll correct that. (I just misread your profile. I admit it and sorry) Anyway, yes, my background had definitely helped me out in the research. I’m originally from Boston (as is my protagonist) and I have a security and law enforcement background (my protagonist is a Boston Detective).

I’ve been watching some TV shows where the writer so obviously must have had experience in that field. If not, they must have done enough research to become an expert. I’m thinking primarily of Bones and Dexter. Bone forensics and blood splatter interpretation are not easy sciences to master. I hope my book shows the same amount of consistency and research.

Emma’s extras:

Emma: If you were a super hero what would be your kryptonite?

JC Marino: Ahhhhhhh… if I get to pick my superpower, I’d rather not have ANY form of kryptonite.

I know… not a real answer.

With superheroes, their Achilles’ Heal is in direct opposition to their superpower. Even someone you wouldn’t think of as a superhero. For example, look at Mr. Spock from Star Trek. His “super” power is his allegiance to logic. What’s his weakness? What’s on the other side of that logic coin? Emotion. We all have a weakness. And I’m sure, no matter what my superpower was, my weakness would include keeping those close to me out of danger.

Emma: If you could travel to any part of the world, or be anywhere at this moment, where would you be?

JC Marino: Funny you should ask. It’s my plan to get to the Grande Canyon this year… as well as London and Paris. With any luck, I’ll at least get to Yosemite. Oh… Hawaii is also on the list!

Emma: If the world in your novel was real, and what you had written was happening, only now you were a main character, would it have turned out any differently?

JC Marino: How can I answer with any detail without giving away the ending of the book? Hmmmm… is THAT why you’re asking? You want me to give away the ending?
(*shifty eyes* *coughs* "Ummm... no of course not...)

Well, the answer is… I don’t think it would turn out differently.

There… it’s an answer but you still don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad.

Emma: If you could ask any author just one question, who would you choose and what would you ask?

JC Marino: Great question!

I’ve thought about this for a while.I don’t know who exactly the writer would be, but I know the question: What is the story you always wanted to write but didn’t?

As for who, that’s really tough.

I thought about Stephen King, who probably would have no answer since he’s written EVERYTHING. I’ve thought about writers throughout history… Shakespeare, Homer, even Dante Alighieri. I’ve even thought about writers who you wouldn’t normally classify as a writer, like Hitler (yes, he wrote a book).

Okay, I’m going to go with Shakespeare. He lived in a time where women weren’t even allowed to participate in theater. With no constraints from church or state, what is the story he would write, but didn’t?

Emma: Thank you so much JC Marino for joining us here today and sharing a bit about the book and about yourself!

There is also currently a Goodreads giveaway JC Marino is hosting! Go check it out and enter for you chance to win a free copy and Joe Danta's badge!

New weekly meme in the works! "From Project to Published" helping hopeful authors

The Twitter party yesterday was amazing! We ended up starting early and ending late and I know I had a great time!!! Thank you so much to everyone who came and participated! I got a lot of compliments on my TweetGrid Guide and decided to keep the twitter tab up with the TweetGrid Guide so that other parties can use it!
I also asked if there was anything that I could be doing that I don't already have in the works and there were some amazing ideas! One of the main ideas that I am hoping to start later this month is a new weekly meme where I could give advice on writing, tell a bit about where I had trouble and how to get past that, share helpful tips for hopeful authors and so much more!
"From Project to Published"
One of the main things I want to do while writing and hopefully as it slowly becomes my full profession is help people and hopefully also inspire them so I think it is completely brilliant! Thank you so much to everyone who helped and passed ideas around with me, I owe it to you!

I have some posts I am planning and a poll in my sidebar for what day of the week would be best for all of you but was also hoping you might be open to letting me know some of the difficulties you have faces and some of the spots in your journey from project to published where I might be able to help you! Please let me know so that I can plan out future posts that I know will actually be helpful to you!

Thank you so much again to everyone who attended the party! I met so many wonderful new friends and really loved it! "From Project to Published" is dedicated to you and all my readers/hopeful authors! I hope we can make all of your dreams become a reality like mine did!

Sincerely,
Emma Michaels
